//Supertramp – „Breakfast in America“ – 1979
“Breakfast in America” (1979) is one of the most selled albums in the world (more than 20 millions) and contains so many hits like “Goodbye Stanger”, “Breakfast in America” or « Take the long way home ». But if I have to chose one song, I will make the same choice as Paul McCartney in 1979 when he was asked to name his favorite song of the year: “The logical song”. “It was wonderful to hear Paul McCartney loved my song” said the singer Rodger Hogson.
Writing “The logical song” as a quite autobiographical song, Hogson created an existentialist text questioning the meaning of life (“Please tell me who I am”). For example, after the divorce from his parents which deeply affected him as he was 12, Hogson was sent into a boarding school. From this time on, he kept a strong criticism of the education system : “But then they sent me away to teach me how to be sensible, logical, responsible, practical. And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable, clinical, intellectual, cynical.” The aim of Hogson succeeded: “a great song is one that people can relate to, that touches them, makes them feel something”. For all these reasons is “The logical song” more than a classical hits.
